Bufalino Typeface

Bufalino is a custom type family designed for the headlines of El Malpensante, an important cultural magazine from Colombia. Its condensed proportions emphasize the vertical rhythm of text. It has very short extenders and its upper case diacritics propose a very innovative design solution that allows text to be set with zero or even negative leading. A good range of weights (9) is intended to take advantage of the visual character of details, especially those of the thin weights in large sizes. The shapes of the whole type family are designed to withstand being mechanically slanted in desktop publishing applications. All the fonts include a small set of alternate glyphs cursive in structure, which combined with a careful slant, can give the impression of true italics. Diagonal strokes have a distinct curve and its extremely open apertures confer something new to a genre almost entirely dominated by grotesks.
